Slow Start to Rabi Campaign

PANAMA - Nov 4/16 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi season crops is off to a slow start, according to initial seeding progress data published by India's agriculture department.

Area sown to all crops by November 4 totals 8.16 million hectares, down from 8.89 million last year and below the recent five-year average of 11.26 million.

Increases in oilseeds, wheat and rice were more than offset by decline sin coarse cereal grain and pulse plantings.

Pulse seedings so far total 2.42 million hectares, compared to 3.007 million at this time last year and the recent average of 5.73 million.
