Little Change in 2016 Crop Forecasts

PANAMA - Sep 20/16 - SNS -- Statistics Canada's model based production estimates for pulses and special crops suggest this year's field pea crop is slightly bigger than forecast in August, while the this year's lentil, canary and mustard seed crops are smaller.

In quantity terms, the differences were not significant, but markets are unsure how much confidence to put in the numbers because they are based on coarse resolution satellite data from Statistics Canada's Crop Condition Assessment Program, data from Statistics Canada's field crop reporting series, and agroclimatic data.

"Production estimates are calculated using the model-based yields multiplied by the reported harvested area from the July Farm Survey of the field crop reporting series," the government agency explained.

It is worth noting that Statistics Canada started working with satellite data in 1987, but only recently felt confident enough to start publishing yield estimates based on that and other date sources.
