South Africa Expects Larger Bean Area

VANCOUVER - Oct 28/14 - SNS -- Farmers in South Africa intend to increase land in dry edible beans during the country's summer cropping season, according to the latest seeding intentions estimates from South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

Despite the 15% increase in seeded area from last year to 64,000 hectares, a return to average yields would see production drop 3% to 79,900 metric tons (MT).

During the past quarter century, South African dry edible bean output and area peaked at 125,000 MT and 100,000 hectares during the 1991-92 marketing year. If farmers follow through on their intentions, this will be the biggest dry bean crop since they planted 77,950 hectares in 2001-02.
