Improved South African Bean Crop

PRETORIA - Jun 26/14 - SNS -- South Africa expects to harvest its largest dry edible bean crop since 2001, according to the latest crop production forecasts by the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

If realized, this year's 89,018 metric ton (MT) harvest, up 48% from last year's 60,200 MT crop and 65% above the recent five-year average harvest of just under 54,000 MT. This is the largest prospective harvest since South Africa grew almost 91,000 MT of beans in 2001.

Increased production in South Africa is a clear response to bullish markets conditions which have prevailed in both colored and white bean markets for much of the past year. Output gains also reflect a general effort by farmers around the world to take advantage of strong edible bean markets.
