Myanmar Pulse Exports Continue Surge in March

WASHINGTON - Jun 2/14 - SNS -- Pulse exports from Myanmar continued to escalate in March, rising above month and year earlier levels, according to the latest data from the country's ministry of commerce.

Myanmar exported 196,760 metric tons (MT) of pulses, up 90% from February and up 58% from the same month last year. India accounted for 60% of total exports followed by Singapore, and Vietnam. Unofficial, border trade with India and China also increased by 94% from 13,382 MT in February to 25,957 in March.

Official exports of beans and pulses totaled 170,803 MT in March which almost double over a level in February following sharply increased shipments to India. Exports to India both officially and unofficially rose significantly in March because a likelihood of dry conditions in India stimulated heavy buying of Myanmar's beans and pulses. Mung beans accounted for 45% in February followed by Matpe (black gram) at 35% and Toor Whole at 11%. By country, India accounted for 60% of total official exports followed by Vietnam at 11%, and Singapore at 10%.
