South Africa Bean Yields Jump

VANCOUVER - Mar 27/14 - SNS -- South Africa is expecting to harvest its largest dry edible bean crop in a decade, according to the latest crop production forecasts by the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

In its second production forecast for 2014 summer crops, SAGIS said it expects output to reach 79,205 metric tons (MT) from 55,820 hectares. The last time production approached 80,000 MT was in 2004.

If realized, production would be up 32% from the 60,200 MT grown last year on 43,550 hectares and 47% above the previous five-year average of 53,832 MT. This year's increase in seeded area is a clear reaction to higher average trading levels for both white and colored beans.
