Saskatchewan Soybean Area May Double

GOA - Feb 19/14 - SNS -- Land in soybeans could double this year in Saskatchewan, STAT Publishing's Brian Clancey told delegates attending the second Global Pulses Conclave, which was organized by the India Pulses and Grains Association.

However, researchers at the University of Saskatchewan believe the long term growth in seeded area will be slower because of the crop's long growing season. as farmers gain experience with the crop and learn which areas are suited for the crop.

Soybeans production is mainly focussed in southeastern Saskatchewan, though farmers across the province appear to be experimenting with the crop, Clancey noted, while discussing the impact of cross-commodity competition.

Saskatchewan has been growing soybeans since the 1980s, but because area has been nominal, Statistics Canada did not start estimating seeding area and production until 2013.
