Bumper Pulse Crop Certain

VANCOUVER - Oct 12/13 - SNS -- Canada may have broken into brand new territory for field pea production, judging from the latest regional yield estimates from Saskatchewan Agriculture's crop reporters.

With the province's field pea and lentil harvests now complete, a better picture is emerging about yields and quality. Saskatchewan Agriculture's yield estimates are not based on surveys. But this year, Saskatchewan's observations have been heading in the same direction as Statistics Canada's official findings. More importantly, the direction reported for yields in the province is consistent with reports from both farmers and processors.

The latest yield estimates from the provincial agriculture department suggest Canada produced 6.246 million metric tons (MT) of pulses this year, while total special crop output could reach 6.611 million MT. This is 932,000 MT more pulses than last year, which holds the previous record. Total special crop output could be up 941,000 MT from last year and up 452,000 from Statistics Canada's latest forecast.
