India Expects Modest Hike in Rabi Pulse Crop

VANCOUVER - Sep 24/13 - SNS -- Better than average tur and urad crops have helped pull prospective kharif or monsoon season pulse production up 1% over last year and 7% above the recent average, according to India's first advance estimates for the 2013-14 marketing year.

Kharif season pulse production is expected to total 6.01 million metric tons (MT), compared to 5.95 million last year and the recent average of 5.59 million.

Total foodgrain production, including pulses, is expected to total 129.32 million MT from this year's kharif crop, up from 128.2 million last year and well above the recent 120.57 million MT average.

Rice production is expected to slip slightly from 92.76 to 92.32 million MT. Coarse grain output is expected to jump from 29.54 to 30.9 million MT. Farmers showed a keen interest in oilseeds this year, with output expected to jump from 20.86 to a record 23.96 million MT.

In releasing its estimates, India's agriculture department noted that tur or pigeon pea output is expected to slip from 3.07 to 3.04 million MT, while urad production should drop from 1.45 to 1.33 million MT and mung bean jump from 760,000 to 900,000 MT.
