General Drop in Australian Pulse Output

VANCOUVER - Sep 10/13 - SNS -- The Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics and Sciences (ABARES) expects pulse production to drop almost 4% to 2.214 million metric tons (MT) largely because of a 10% drop in seeded area to 1.586 million hectares.

Virtually all of the decline is accounted for by chickpeas, with ABARES looking for production to drop over 18% to 669,000 MT, with lower average yields combining with smaller area to push output lower. By contrast, though lupin seedings were down 15%, production is not expected to change because of vastly improved growing conditions in the state of Western Australia.

In releasing its latest crop report, ABARES noted that the variability in pulse production is a clear reflection of which states grow which pulse crop. Australia is experiencing huge variations in growing conditions, with total winter crop output expected to rise in Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia but fall in New South Wales and Queensland.
