China's Pea Demand Expanding

SHANGHAI - Aug 30/13 - SNS -- China could import a record quantity of field peas during the 2013 calendar year, Zhang Baosheng, general manager of Cofco-Shandong Vermicelli and Beans Import/Export Co. Ltd. told delegates attending the China Pulse Import and Export Industry Conference in Harbin.

Rising demand for peas is fueled by steady growth in the size of the vermicelli noodle market in China. Production has jumped from 408,000 metric tons (MT) in 2010 to 480,000 MT in 2011; 550,000 last year and a forecast 630,000 MT this year.

Peas are not the most important ingredient, but some of the growth reflects a desire among consumers for new tastes and attributes. Among the fastest growing product areas are those in the cereals sector, which combine starch from potato, corn and other products.
