Saskatchewan Harvest Underway in South

REGINA - Aug 22/13 - SNS -- Limited harvest progress was reported in Saskatchewan for the past week, with the provincial agriculture department saying less than 1% of the entire crop is in the bin, compared to 11% at this time last year and the recent average of 7% of all crops harvested by the start of the third week of August.

Saskatchewan Agriculture noted harvest operations have begun in many areas of the province, with another 4% swathed or ready to straight combine.

Across the province, 5% of the peas and winter wheat and 2% of the lentils have been combined. Meanwhile, 5% of the canola has been swathed. Swathing of canola has started in the southern regions of the province and is expected to start in the northeast and northwest regions within the week.

Desiccation of pulses has just started in the northeast and northwest regions. Warm temperatures will be needed into the harvest season to get the majority of the crop in the bin in good condition.
