Smaller U.S. Rice Crop

WASHINGTON - Aug 12/13 - SNS -- U.S. rice production is forecast at 181 million cwt, down 9% from last year, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

Area for harvest is expected to total 2.45 million acres, unchanged from June but 9% lower than 2012. Based on conditions as of August 4, the average United States yield is forecast at 7,406 pounds per acre, down 43 pounds from last year.

Record high yields are expected in Louisiana, Missouri, and Texas. As of August 4, 53% of the United States acreage was headed, 24 percentage points behind last year and 3 percentage points behind the 5-year average. Seventy% of the United States acreage was rated in good to excellent condition as of August 4, compared with 69% rated in these two categories at the same time last year.
