Durum Wheat Output Remains Down From 2012

WASHINGTON - Aug 12/13 - SNS -- Durum wheat production in the United States is forecast at 60.2 million bushels, up 5% from July but down 27% from 2012, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

The United States yield is forecast at 40.1 bushels per acre, up 1.8 bushels from last month and up 1.1 bushels from last year. Expected area to be harvested for grain totals 1.50 million acres, unchanged from last month but down 29% from last year.

Due to excessive moisture this season, crop development has progressed significantly behind normal in Montana and North Dakota, the two largest Durum-producing States. By the beginning of August, harvest had yet to begin in either State. As of August 4, crop condition in Montana and North Dakota was rated 46 and 79% good to excellent, respectively. Yield forecasts are up from last year in all major producing States except California.
