WASHINGTON - Aug 12/13 - SNS --Sorghum production is forecast at 359 million bushels, up 45% from last year, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.
Area harvested for grain is forecast at 6.09 million acres, unchanged from June but up 23% from 2012. Based on August 1 conditions, yield is forecast at 59.0 bushels per acre, up 9.2 bushels from last year. A record high yield is forecast in Louisiana.
As of August 4, 54% of the sorghum crop was headed, 9 percentage points behind last year and 2 percentage points behind the 5-year average. So far, 47% of the crop was rated in good to excellent condition, compared with 25% at the same time last year.
