Little Change in U.S. Barley Outlook

WASHINGTON - Aug 12/13 - SNS -- Barley production for the 2013 barley crop is forecast at 218 million bushels, down fractionally from the July 1 forecast and 1% below 2012, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

Based on conditions as of August 1, the average yield for the United States is forecast at 70.7 bushels per acre, down 0.7 bushel from the previous forecast but 2.8 bushels above last year. Area harvested for grain or seed, at 3.08 million acres, is unchanged from the previous forecast but down 5% from 2012. In Colorado, producers are expecting a yield equaling the record high.

Following significant fieldwork delays in portions of the major barley-producing region, 97% of the Nation's crop was sown by June 30. Emergence was virtually complete in most States by July 7; however, seed germination in North Dakota remained well behind normal despite warm temperatures and drier weather. Three-quarters of the Nation's barley crop was headed by mid-July.
