Saskatchewan Pulses Good to Excellent

REGINA - Aug 1/13 - SNS -- Pulses and specialty crops in Saskatchewan are in mainly good to excellent conditions, according to the latest weekly crop report from the provincial Ministry of Agriculture.

"The majority of crops are in good to excellent condition. 84% of spring wheat, 82% of canola, 81% of lentils and 88% of peas are in good to excellent condition," Saskatchewan Agriculture said.

While farmers in southwestern and central Saskatchewan are preparing machinery for this year's harvest, there seems to be a general complaint that cooler than normal overnight temperatures are slowing crop development.

Overnight temperatures are dropping into the single digits in many areas, leading to talk about the risk of an August frost which would catch a large part of the crop before it fully mature. August frost events are infrequent in Saskatchewan, but when they occur, yields and quality can be severely affected.
