U.S. Durum Harvest Plunges

WASHINGTON - Jul 11/13 - SNS --Durum wheat production is forecast at 57.5 million bushels, down 30% from 2012, according to the latest crop production estimates from the USDA.

The United States yield is forecast at 38.3 bushels per acre, down 0.7 bushel from last year. Expected area to be harvested for grain totals 1.50 million acres, unchanged from the Acreage report released June 28, 2013 but down 29% from last year.

Due to excessive moisture this season, crop development has progressed significantly behind normal in Montana and North Dakota, the two largest Durum-producing States. As of June 30, crop condition in Montana and North Dakota was rated 69 and 80% good to excellent, respectively. Yield forecasts are up from last year in most major producing States except California.
