Saskatchewan Seeding Pushes Forward

REGINA - May 16/13 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's crops made excellent progress in some of Saskatchewan's key lentil growing areas, though farmers in other parts of the province struggled to plant much of this year's intended acreage.

In its second crop progress report of the season, Saskatchewan Agriculture said 8% of all crops were planted during the week ending May 13, compared to 25% at this time last year and the recent average of 16%.

Crop reporters indicate that seeding progress is at 29% in the southwest; 4% in the southeast; 3% in the northwest; less than 1% in the northeast; 2% in the east-central region and 3% in the west-central region.

Minimal precipitation was reported in most areas this past week, which allowed fields to dry and seeding to progress. The five-year seeding progress average at this time of year is 16%.

Provincially, cropland topsoil moisture is rated as 24% surplus, 71% adequate and 5% short. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is 16% surplus, 75% adequate and 9% short.

Rain is forecast for much of Saskatchewan in the coming days, but most farmers say that light rain will not cause much delay to seeding progress.
