More Comfortable N.S. Supply Situation

VANCOUVER - Jan 13/13 - SNS -- The North American supply situation for dry edible beans became slightly more comfortable with the final crop estimates for 2012 issued by the USDA on January 11.

Unlike 2011, farmers in North Dakota were able to finish to seeding all the beans they intended to grow in 2012. At the same time, farmers in Mexico are enjoying a break from the drought which had been gripping dry edible bean producing areas in their country, resulting in a massive improvement in seeded area and average yields.

The net result is that dry edible bean production in Canada, the United States and Mexico is now expected to jump 66% above 2011 to a forecast 2.82 million metric tons (MT). If achieved, this will be the biggest harvest since 2006 and 19% above the previous five-year average and almost 300,000 MT above the average harvest for the years between 2006 and 2010.
