U.S. Edible Bean Crops Nears 1.45 MMT

WASHINGTON - Jan 11/13 - SNS -- Dry edible bean prodicytion in the United States ended up at 31.9 million cwt (100 pound units) or 1,448,109 meric tons (MT), according to the USDA's final crop report for 2012

The final harvest estimate is up roughly 7,700 MT from the USDA's December estimate and up 61% from 2011. Planted area is estimated at 1.74 million acres, up 43% from 2011. Harvested area is estimated at 1.69 million acres, 45% above the previous year. The average United States yield is estimated at a record high 1,889 pounds per acre, an increase of 186 pounds from 2011.

North Dakota's harvest began the end of August, about two weeks ahead of the five-year average. Harvest progressed quickly due to favorable conditions and was virtually complete by the end of September, more than a month ahead of normal. In Michigan, harvest began on a limited basis the week of September 10 and wrapped up the week ending October 28.

Idaho production is the largest crop since 1990. Chickpea yields in North Idaho were reported as excellent, and the southern Idaho crop was reported to be better than last year.
