India Hikes Rabi Pulse MSPs

VANCOUVER - Nov 1/12 - SNS -- India's minimum support prices (MSP) for pulses were increased over last year, with the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) accepting the recommendations of the Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP).

The CCEA has approved the MSP of Barley at Rs. 980 per 100 kilograms or U.S. $, desi chickpeas or gram at Rs. 3000 per 100 kilograms or U.S. $553 per metric ton (MT), Masur or red lentils Rs. 2900 per 100 kilograms or $534 MT, rapeseed/mustard Rs. 3000 per 100 kilograms or $553 MT, and Safflower Rs. 2800 per 100 kilograms or $516 MT.

A decision on the MSP for wheat was delayed because of disagreement within Cabinet. While the Food Ministry believes the MSP should be unchanged, India's agriculture departments argues that because of rising fuel costs, the MSP for wheat should increase Rs.115 per 100 kilograms to Rs. 1400 or $258 MT.

The CACP did not recommend increases to the MSP for wheat and barley because of over-production. However, the commission said that if India bans exports of wheat and barley in 2013, it should compensate farmers.
