Little Variation in Special Crop OutlooksVANCOUVER - Sep 6/12 - SNS -- Yield reports from western Canada's provincial agriculture departments suggest Canada could grow slightly more lentils, peas and mustard seed than first thought, but fewer chickpeas and canaryseed. There can be significant differences between the provincial crop estimates and the official numbers from Statistics Canada. The primary reason is that Statistics Canada surveys individual farmers across the growing area; while provincial estimates are based on reports from crop reporters. However, interim numbers from the provincial agriculture departments offer important insight into the current thinking of farmers about what is coming in from their fields. Yield reports from Saskatchewan Agriculture point to the problems estimating this year's production. There are significant variations in yields both within and between crop districts.
