Kharif Pulse Area May Drop 900,000 HAVANCOUVER - Aug 3/12 - SNS -- Seeding progress during the past week was "normal" for India's kharif or summer monsoon season pulse crops, judging from India's Agriculture Department's weekly seeding progress update. Land in pulses now totals 7.279 million hectares, compared to 8.1 million at this time last year, 8.838 million in 2010 and 7.654 million in 2009. Normally, 75% of all the kharif season pulses that will be planted, have been planted by the beginning of August. Though seeding stretches out through the beginning of October, kharif season pulse planting normally wraps up by the middle of September. More importantly, the final push seems to occur through the middle of August, after which India's farmers only plant an average 285,000 hectares of pulses per week.
