India's Rabi Area Remains Below Last Year

VANCOUVER - Dec 30/11 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi or winter season crops in India remains behind last year, with land in all crops down 2% from this time last year at 55.348 million hectares, according to the country's agriculture department.

The biggest percentage decline is in oilseed area, down 6.3% from this time last year at 7.922 million hectares, while India's farmers have so far planted 1.3% less grains at 33.572 million hectares, and 1.2% less pulses at 13.854 million.

India's agriculture department did not break down pulse seeded area by class. However, last week it noted that land in gram or chickpeas was down 4.3% at 8.578 million hectares.
