India's Pulse Area Falls Behind Last Year

VANCOUVER - Dec 16/11 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi or winter pulse crop has slipped behind last year, eliminating most hopes production would increase enough to offset the decline in the size of the summer or kharif season crop.

While land in chickpeas or gram appears to be up over last year, the implication is seedings of red lentils, peas and other pulses would be down.

Commenting on progress so far this year, India's agriculture department said, "Higher area has been reported in gram in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan. Less coverage area has been reported from Maharashtra and Karnataka mainly due to dry weather condition."
