Season Starts With Slower Pea Movement

VANCOUVER - Sep 2/11 - SNS -- Bulk conventional exports of pulses and other specialty crops from Canada started the 2011-12 marketing year on a relatively quiet note, with the quantity shipped rising from the previous month but falling far short of last year's totals.

During the month, exporters loaded three ships at Vancouver with 110,331 metric tons (MT) of peas and two ships at Thunder Bay with 29,755 MT of lentils, likely destined for Turkey.

Movement should rebound in September. One vessel which was intended to be loaded in Vancouver during August slid into September; while another four have been nominated to lift peas from Vancouver this month. Navigation is open in Thunder Bay, but so far there have been no vessel nominations for peas.
