U.S. Pulse Inventories Jump

WASHINGTON - Jun 30/11 - SNS -- Unsold inventories of peas and lentils are up sharply over last year in the United States, according to the USDA's latest stocks in all positions estimates.

Most of the increase is accounted for by lentils, which more than offset modest declines in field pea inventories.

Pulse crops stored in all positions on June 1, 2011 in the United States and the change from June 1, 2010 are: dry edible peas, 3.71 million cwt (100 pound units), down 8%; lentils, 1.74 million cwt, up 353%; Austrian winter peas, 90,000 cwt, up 50%; all chickpeas, 329,000 cwt, up 16%; small chickpeas, 95,000 cwt, up 10%; and large chickpeas, 234,000 cwt, up 18%. Small chickpeas are defined as peas that will pass through a 20/64 inch round hole screen.
