Canadian Special Crops Face Paradigm Shift

VANCOUVER - May 29/11 - SNS -- Fundamental changes in the business environment in Canadian agriculture seem likely now that the Conservative Party has won a majority in Parliament.

Of two possible game-changing policy initiatives, the first is widely expected: changing the Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) Act to allow farmers to opt out. The second suggestion from the federal Agriculture Minister is a complete surprise: moving away from the cap on revenue derived from hauling grain.

On its own, either change would fundamentally change the competitive landscape for pulses and specialty crops grown in western Canada. Combined, they could have a profound impact on world markets.
