Seeding Progress Lags Last Year

VANCOUVER - May 19/11 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's crops fell behind last year's pace through the middle of May, largely because fields in the eastern part of the province were still too wet for armers to enter them, according to the latest weekly crop progress report from Saskatchewan Agriculture.

"Cropland topsoil moisture across the province is rated as 36% surplus, 62% adequate and 2% dry. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 30% surplus, 65% adequate and five% short," Saskatchewan Agriculture said.

So far, 23% of all crops have been planted, down from 28% at this time last year and well behind the recent five-year average of 44% complete.

"Significant seeding progress was made in western regions during the past week," Saskatchewan Agriculture said. "Producers in the eastern regions are just starting to get into their fields.

"The southeast is reporting 8% seeded, the southwest 36%, the east-central 11%, the west-central 30%, the northeast 14% and the northwest 41%. Across the province, 46% of the field peas, 35% of the lentils, 28% of the durum, 22% of the spring wheat and 20% of the canola has been seeded."
