Only 5% Saskatchewan's Crop Seeded

VANCOUVER - May 12/11 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's crops is advancing at the same rate as last year in Saskatchewan, falling far behind the recent five year average for this time of year, according to the latest crop progress report from Saskatchewan Agriculture.

As was the case at this time last year, 5% of all crops have been planted, well below the recent five-year average of 14%.

The southwest is reporting 13% seeded and the southeastern and west-central regions are reporting 5% seeded, compared to 1% in the east-central, northeastern and northwestern regions.

The majority of Saskatchewan producers got a late start to field work due to excess moisture. Most areas reported rain last week that will further delay seeding.

The majority of crop reporters are indicating that fields are still very wet. Cropland topsoil moisture across the province is rated as 55% surplus and 45% adequate. Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is rated as 40% surplus, 59% adequate and 1% short.
