Pea Exports Soar in April

VANCOUVER - May 2/11 - SNS -- Bulk conventional exports of field peas from Canada soared in April, jumping past 300,000 metric tons (MT) for the first time this season and only the third time in the history of bulk conventional pea movement from Canada.

Port clearances during the first nine months of the 2010-11 marketing year have already established a new single season record at 1.99 million MT, surpassing the previous marketing year record for pea exports by roughly 125,000 MT. Total movement is now about 893,000 MT above the same period last season.

Field pea movement is starting May on a relatively strong footing. Three vessels which were intended to be loaded in Vancouver during April have slid into May; while another had been nominated to lift peas from Vancouver this month. Navigation is open in Thunder Bay, but so far there have been no vessel nominations for peas and other specialty crops.
