Pulses Need To Find Price To Boost Area in 2012

VANCOUVER - Apr 2/11 - SNS -- The USDA's seeding intentions estimates for 2011 were not significantly different from what was farmers were thought to be thinking heading into the report.

Strong markets for corn and wheat pulled land away from soybeans, pulses and other crops. The net result was that farmers said they intend to cut land in dry edible beans, field peas, lentils and chickpeas 21% to 3.34 million acres.

The biggest decline is for dry edible beans, with growers saying they wanted to slash seeded area from 1.91 to 1.3 million acres. If growers stick with their current plans, this will be the lowest edible bean area in the United States in over a generation.
