Pea Area Falling 22% in U.S.

WASHINGTON - Mar 31/11 - SNS -- Growers in the United States intend to plant 586,000 acres of field peas this year, down 22% from 2010, judging from the USDA's seeding intentions estimates for 2011.

All estimating States (Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, Oregon, and Washington) anticipate lower planted acreages this season. If realized, this season will be the third consecutive year of declining United States planted acreage.

Farmers in North Dakota, the largest producing State, intend to plant 275,000 acres this year, a decrease of 36% from a year ago. Montana growers plan to plant 215,000 acres, 2% below last year. Growers in Idaho and Oregon are expected to reduce their planted acreage from last year by 19% and 14%, respectively. Washington growers anticipate a 4% decrease from a year ago.
