India Expects 16.51 MMT Pulse Crop

VANCOUVER - Feb 9/11 - SNS -- Total pulse output in India is expected to top 16.5 million metric tons (MT) during the 2010-11 production cycle, according to the second advance estimates issued by the country's agriculture department.

"We are likely to produce 232.07 million MT of foodgrains during 2010-11 compared to 218.11 million MT last year. This is only marginally below the record production of 234.47 million MT of foodgrains in 2008-09," the agriculture department said in releasing the data. "We are likely to achieve record production of wheat (81.47 million MT), pulses (16.51 million MT) and cotton (33,927,000 bales of 170 kilograms each) this year."

Central Statistics Office (CSO) has estimated that the agriculture, forestry and fishery sector is likely to show a growth of 5.4% in its GDP during 2010-11, as against the previous year’s growth of 0.4%. The second advance estimates of crop production for 2010-11 confirm the findings of CSO.
