SAF Edible Bean Output Sliding

PRETORIA - Jan 25/11 - SNS -- Dry edible bean production in South Africa will likely be down for the second year in a row, according to preliminary seeded area estimates from the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

Area sown to dry edible beans ended up lower than intended as farmers responded to bullish markets for grains and oilseeds. International markets for dry edible beans have not yet been swept up in the battle for acres being waged by grains and oilseeds, with the result there have not been as significant changes in prices during the past quarter.

The net result is that the income potential of edible beans has lost ground to other crops, making it easier for some farmers in South Africa to switch out of the crop. Seeded area is now expected to reach 41,300 hectares, down from 44,100 last year and well below the recent high of 50,725 hectares in 2005.
