European Pea Output Rises 50%

VANCOUVER - Nov 26/10 - SNS -- Field pea production among European Union member states rose 50% this year to total 2.1 million metric tons (MT), which is above the recent five-year average, but below the recent 10-year average harvest for the region.

France remains the most important field pea producing country in the European Union, accounting for almost 53% or 1.118 million MT of the region's total output this year. Last year, France accounted for 40% of the 1.413 million MT of peas grown in the European Union.

The next largest producer was Spain, which faces a chronic fundamental shortage of peas. It was followed by the United Kingdom, which exports marrowfat, green and yellow peas to human consumption markets around the globe.
