General Decline in Specialty Crop Acreage

VANCOUVER - Nov 20/10 - SNS -- Everything is lining up for an overall decrease in specialty crop acreage in Canada next year, while land in cereal grains and oilseeds will be up sharply.

There is a lot of talk about "wall to wall" canola in 2011. That is certainly an exaggeration, but canola seedings in Canada will undoubtedly set a new record at around 19 million acres. At the same time land in cereal and coarse grains will be up sharply over this year as farmers return land that was unintentionally summerfallowed back into production.

Wet weather starting when crops were planted and continuing through to harvest forced farmers in western Canada to double idled land to 12 million acres, with 9.67 million in Saskatchewan. Last year, summerfallow totalled 6.23 million across western Canada, with farmers in Saskatchewan idling 4.2 million acres.
