Myanmar Pulse Export Slide

VANCOUVER -Nov 9/10 - SNS -- Reduced import demand from India for the types of pulses grown by Myanmar is resulting in the slowest year for exports since 2004 and 2005.

Total shipments in September ended up around 70,381 metric tons (MT), up 11% from the 63,216 shipped the same month last year, but down slightly from the previous month. Matpe (Black gram) accounted for 67% of the total exports, followed by Mung bean (Green gram) 15% and Toor Whole (Pigeon pea) 13%. India remained the largest buyer accounting for 63,994 MT or 91% of total exports. Only 6,500 MT of Matpe ready cargo (RC) and 1,150 MT of Matpe Special RC were traded in Bayint Naung wholesale market.

This lifted calendar year to date exports to just over 745,000 MT, down from almost 1.3 million during the same nine-month period last year. The U.S. agricultural attache for the country said the year to date reduction reflects bigger crops in India in response to that country's price incentive program.
