WASHINGTON - May 31/02 - SNS -- Pig production in the United States inched upward during April, rising 1% to 8.57 million head, according to the latest data compiled by the USDA.
Sows farrowing during this period totaled 965 thousand head, 1% above last year. The average pigs per litter for April declined to 8.88, compared to 8.90 last year.
The U.S. inventory of sows and gilts on May 1, 2002, was 5.99 million head, slightly above May 1, 2001. U.S. sows and gilts bred during April totaled 1.18 million head, up 1% from the previous year.
