Better Yields Than Thought, But Down From 2022

OTTAWA - Dec 4/23 - SNS -- Statistics Canada's final survey-based production estimates for 2023 pegged combined output of pulses and specialty crops 11% above its September, model-based forecast.

Based on a direct survey of 27,200 farmers across the country between October 6 to November 12, the production was up from September for all crops, except canaryseed, with estimated output tumbling from a forecast 124,000 metric tons (MT) to 112,210.

The biggest gains were recorded for peas and lentils, with total lentil production advanced 8% from the September forecast to 1.671 million MT; while field pea production was pegged 15% higher at 2.609 million.

Despite this year's improved yield forecasts, final production estimates for peas, lentils, and canaryseed were down from last year; while Statistics Canada said output of dry edible beans, chickpeas, mustard seed and sunflower were up.
