Mixed Week For Peas

PANAMA - Mar 10/23 - SNS -- Field pea markets closed out the week's trading on a mixed note despite relatively strong export movement from both Canada and the United States.

Markets were moderately surprised by the latest production estimate for Australia. ABAES increased the estimated size of the pea harvest from its December estimate of 283,000 metric tons (MT) to 314,000 of mainly dunn peas, compared to 261,000 last year an the previous five year average of 248,000 MT.

By contrast seeded area was reduced from 205,000 hectares in December to 198,000, with the increase in output attributed to higher average yields. Interestingly, while plantings were up slightly from last year, they remain well below the previous five year average of 239,000 hectares.
