Pea Markets Experience Calm Week

PANAMA - Apr 16/21 - SNS -- Field pea markets maintained their relatively quiet tone through the past week, with markets relieved to see some moisture accumulations in western Canada in advance of planting this year's crop.

Seeding is already underway in parts of the United States, though progress as the week got underway was limited to the U.S. Pacific northwest. There were no reports of planting in Canada. On average, 10% of the Canadian crop is sown during April, ranging from just 1% in 2018 and 2% last year to a high of 12.8% in 2019.

Markets are not expected any surprises in the April 27 seeding intentions report for Canada. There are not significant differences of opinion over what growers will do, ranging from modest declines to modest increases over the 4.255 million acres sown last year.
