Smaller U.S. Rice Crop
WASHINGTON - Aug 13/15 - SNS -- U.S. rice production is forecast at 205 million cwt, down 7% from last year, according to the latest USDA production forecast for 2015.
Area for harvest is expected to total 2.74 million acres, unchanged from June but 6% lower than 2014. Based on conditions as of August 1, the average United States yield is forecast at 7,472 pounds per acre, down 100 pounds from last year. Expected yields are down from last year in all States except Texas.
By August 2, 63% of the acreage was heading, 6 percentage points ahead of last year and 4 percentage points ahead of the five-year average.
