Third Largest Corn Crop Enroute

WASHINGTON - Aug 13/15 - SNS -- Corn production in the United States is could reach 13.7 billion bushels from 88.9 million acres, the third highest crop on record for the United States, according to the USDA's first productiuon forecast for 2015.

Forecaste yields, at 168.8 bushels per acre, is expected to be the second highest yield on record for the United States. Ten States expect a record high corn yield for 2015.

The USDA reckons 90% of the corn was at or beyond the silking stage by August 2, two percentage points ahead of last year and slightly ahead of the 5-year average. At the same time, 29% of the United States corn crop was at or beyond the dough stage, 4 percentage points behind last year and 2 points behind the 5-year average. In 11 of the 18 major estimating States, the percentage of the crop in the dough stage was behind the 5-year average. Overall, 70% of the corn was reported to be in good to excellent condition, on August 2, three percentage points below the same time last year.
