Record Corn Crop in The Making

WASHINGTON - Aug 12/14 SNS -- This year's corn harvest in the United States is expected to rise 1% over last year to a record 14.0 billion bushels, according to the USDA's latest crop production forecast.

Based on conditions as of August 1, yields are expected to average a record 167.4 bushels per acre, up 8.6 bushels from 2013. If realized, this will be the highest yield and production on record for the United States.

The 2014 corn planted area for all purposes is estimated at 91.6 million acres, unchanged from the June estimate but down 4% from 2013. Area harvested for grain is forecast at 83.8 million acres, unchanged from the June forecast but down 4% from 2013.

The start of this year's corn planting was delayed due to late season winter storms and lingering cold weather across most of the Midwest. More favorable weather conditions returned to the major corn producing areas by the end of April, allowing planting progress to advance rapidly. As May drew to a close, dry, warm conditions across the corn-producing regions aided planting progress and crop development.
