WASHINGTON - Jun 30/14 - SNS -- Area planted to sorghum in 2014 is estimated at 7.47 million acres, down 7% from last year, according to the USDA's seeded area report for 2014.
Kansas and Texas, the leading sorghum producing States, account for 78% of the United States acreage. Growers expect to harvest 6.40 million acres for grain, down 2% from last year.
As of June 22, 88% of the crop had been planted, 3 percentage points behind last year and 2 percentage points behind the 5- year average. Around 57% of the crop was rated in good to excellent condition on June 22, compared with 54% at the same time last year.
