New Crop Pea Stocks Lag Last Year

PANAMA - Aug 30/19 - SNS -- North American field pea harvests continued to advance at a slower than normal pace, but progress in the United States is well ahead of Canada with 72% of the crop in the bin, compared to 17% in Canada.

This suggest around 586,000 metric tons (MT) of new crop peas were in the bin as the week got underway in the United States, compared to over 603,000 last year and the recent average of 700,000 MT. Canadian growers started the week with around 752,000 MT in the bin, compared to 2.74 million at the same time last year.

Base on surveys before the harvest started, Statistics Canada reckons Canada will produce 4.53 million MT of peas this year, up from 3.58 million last year and the recent five year average of 3.9 million.
