Overall Decline in Field Crop Output

OTTAWA - Aug 29/19 - SNS -- Statistics Canada's first production estimate for 2019 suggests total pulse and specialty will be up over last year, according to yield estimates provided to Statistics Canada by about 13,110 farmers between July 4 to August 5.

Production of all crops in the category, except soybeans, will jump from 6.75 to 7.81 million metric tons (MT). The increase was the result of a major increase in prospective pulse production from 6.35 to 7.53 million MT.

This year's harvest was not underway during the survey period, with the result the data reflects grower yield estimates as opposed to actual production. Statistics Canada will update its numbers on September 12, based on modelled yield and production estimates derived from remote sensing, survey and agroclimatic data sources. That will be followed by the final production estimate on December 6, which will finalize both seeded area and production.
