Peas Feel Singled Out by India

PANAMA - Dec 22/17 - SNS -- Canadian pulse exporters are starting to feel more like their country has been singled out by the Indian government for special treatment.

Canada's exemption from fumigating shipments with methyl bromide at time of loading expired before other countries. Canada is the world's largest field pea exporters and the duty exemption for peas expired before that for lentils and chickpeas, even though they all compete directly with rabi season pulses.

Field peas are imported as a direct substitute by millers for desi chickpeas; while almost all chickpea imports from Australia and other countries are a direct replacement.
